Laminate Countertop Repair & Replacement: Chips, Edges, Tops
Updated 2026-10-31 · Sources verified 2026-07-20
Chips and open seams: Kampel SeamFil is the repair paste the laminate makers point to, and it has rules. Permit in Orange County: no permit needed. Exempt finish work under FBC 105.2 and Orange County's published list — but exempt work must still comply with the Florida Building Code. The full rule and its official source are below, with the code requirements and mistakes that trip up Orlando homeowners.
Key facts before you start
- Chips and open seams: Kampel SeamFil is the repair paste the laminate makers point to, and it has rules. 'Clean joint with SF-99 Solvent', work a small amount on scrap 'until it begins to thicken', then 'Press thickened SeamFil into joint with putty knife'; 'DON'T apply SeamFil directly from the tube (if you do, excess shrinkage may occur)'. It 'begins to harden immediately. If shrinkage occurs, repeat process one hour later', and anything over 1/16 in 'is considered a large void' needing more than one pass. It is not for 'hairline cracks or scratches'. A nicked putty knife 'may scratch the laminate'.
- A lifted edge or bubble is a contact-cement job (DAP Weldwood TDS): both surfaces 'clean, dry and free of foreign materials', air and surfaces 'above 65°F for a minimum of 24 hours before and after application'. 'Apply an even coat of adhesive to both surfaces', wait '15-20 minutes' until it 'will feel tacky and appear glossy', then press 'moving from one end to the other to avoid bubbles'. It 'bonds permanently with pressure and work cannot be shifted into place after firm contact is made', so use dowels 'every 6 to 12 inches' to hold the laminate off until aligned, then roll hard: '75 lbs. of pressure being applied to a 3-inch J roller'. Full strength 'in 7 days'. Formica adds: never assemble wet adhesive, and 'Do not use water-based adhesives.'
- Heat is what kills laminate. Formica: 'Prolonged exposure to temperatures of 140°F or higher may cause the laminate to separate from the core material', so 'Use a trivet, insulated hot pad or other protective device beneath all hot cookware'. The surface itself only 'can withstand heat up to 275°F for short periods of time' and 'AVOID IRONING OR PLACING A HOT IRON ON LAMINATE SURFACES'. Wilsonart: pots straight from the oven or burner 'can cause cracking or blistering'. Belanger: keep the toaster and coffee maker off a seam, 'because the heat can damage the seam'.
- Cleaning that does not etch it: 'a clean, damp, nonabrasive cotton cloth and a mild liquid detergent'; 'Do not flood the laminate, especially near seams, since water can penetrate and cause the substrate to swell'; 'Never use cleaners containing acid, or alkali' (Formica names ceramic-cooktop, drain, toilet-bowl, tub-and-tile and oven cleaners). Wilsonart: 'Drain cleaners containing lye will permanently damage' it, 'Steel wool and other abrasive pads will damage' it, and bleach on a stain may 'stand no longer than two minutes'. A swollen, soft particleboard core around the sink is not a surface repair: the top is done.
- Buying a post-form replacement: measure along the back wall, 'section by section', and where a run ends in the open 'allow an extra 3/4 in to the total length of the countertop for the overhang' (VT). Check the corner for square with a 3-4-5 triangle (Belanger: 3 ft and 4 ft legs should measure exactly 5 ft), and order 'Additional material ... to scribe for a tight fit to end wall' (Formica). Miter corners are factory cut: 'Miter joints cannot be cut with a circular saw. Countertops requiring miter joints should be ordered with pre-cut miters' (Pionite). Stock tops are 3/4 in particleboard core in 8, 10 and 12 ft lengths (VT).
- Cutting to length without chipping: tape the line, mark it on both faces, then 'proceed to saw from the bottom side' with a power saw (VT) or, with a hand saw, 'cut from the decorative side and apply force ONLY on the down stroke' (Pionite), 10 to 12 teeth per inch. Lay the top 'face down on a blanket, piece of cardboard' while you work. File the cut smooth. Sink cutout: trace the sink and cut '1/4 in to 3/8 in smaller than the line' (Formica; VT says 3/8 to 1/2 in), drill a starter hole in each corner, keep every inside corner rounded ('1/8 in minimum, to avoid stress cracking'), and 'seal the edges of the substrate with adhesive or polyurethane' at the sink (Pionite). Keep the cutout as the template for next time.
- Joining the miter: on sawhorses, upside down, glue or sealant on the mitered edges, 'Tighten fasteners only enough to hold them in place. Align front edges and tighten fasteners. Tap surfaces to align (use wood blocks to avoid damaging the surface). Then tighten fasteners securely' (Formica). Check the decorative side stays flush as each miter bolt comes up (Pionite), and 'DO NOT POUND DIRECTLY OVER THE MITER BOLTS' (Belanger). Join the miter before the top goes on the cabinets, and buy the miter bolt kit with the top.
- End caps and scribing: fill the open end so it is one thickness front to back (Pionite), then 'set household iron at medium heat. Iron cap onto the end of the countertop with a back-and-forth motion. Let set for one minute, then tap the cap carefully with a rubber mallet. Finish trimming with a fine file, applying pressure only on the up strokes' (Formica); 'Once the end cap is joined to the countertop it cannot be repositioned'. To fit a wavy wall, tape the top of the backsplash, set a compass to the widest gap, scribe, and 'Use a belt sander or block plane to remove the area of the backsplash that is outside the pencil mark' (Pionite).
- Setting it: build-up strips where the drawers need clearance (VT) and a full build-up on any overhang of 6 in or more (Belanger); then 'Secure to cabinets with wood screws or panel adhesive. If using screws, check length to assure that they won't protrude through the countertop' (VT), 'wood thickness + 1/2 in' and no more than 16 in apart (Belanger), washers on every screw (Pionite). Caulk the backsplash to the wall and the sink rim: 'All sinks must be sealed with sealant to avoid water damage to base material' (Formica).
- Permit: Orange County's no-permit list names 'Replacing cabinets or countertops in the same location (without changing the layout)'. Moving the sink or adding an outlet in the backsplash is plumbing or electrical work the same page says does need a permit; the kitchen sink and GFCI guides cover those jobs.
