Matching Knockdown & Orange Peel Texture on Walls
Updated 2026-10-31 · Sources verified 2026-07-20
Name the pattern before you buy anything. Orange peel is a fine spray left as it lands; knockdown is a heavier splatter flattened with a knife once it starts to set. Permit in Orange County: no permit needed. Exempt finish work under FBC 105.2 and Orange County's published list — but exempt work must still comply with the Florida Building Code. The full rule and its official source are below, with the code requirements and mistakes that trip up Orlando homeowners.
Key facts before you start
- Name the pattern before you buy anything. Orange peel is a fine spray left as it lands; knockdown is a heavier splatter flattened with a knife once it starts to set. Homax's water-based can does both: 'Place BLACK STRAW in actuator tip' for orange peel and 'Place WHITE STRAW' for knockdown. Every maker says the same first step: 'Always practice spraying on cardboard or scrap drywall to determine preferred pattern' (Homax), or 'set your pattern on scrap sheetrock or cardboard before spraying your finished product' (Marshalltown). Hold the test board next to the wall in the same light before you touch the patch.
- A patch blends only if it starts primed and flat. USG: 'Application of a prime coat is necessary to equalize surface porosity', using 'Sheetrock First Coat flat latex paint or a good quality interior latex flat wall paint with high solids content', undiluted and dry before texturing. Homax: 'IF PATCHING OR APPLYING TO NEW DRYWALL, PRIMING SURFACE PRIOR TO APPLICATION IS RECOMMENDED', then 'Apply to match existing surface, feathering outward and overlapping existing ceiling texture.' USG's reason: the primer is there 'to equalize the surface porosity and to provide a uniform color', which is what keeps a patch from showing through the paint.
- Small patch: an aerosol can. Homax orange peel: hold the can upright and 'SPRAY at a distance of 12-18" from surface using a sweeping (back and forth) motion'; 'For FINER ORANGE PEEL, heat can by running under warm water.' Knockdown: 'build texture up slightly, or spray in short bursts', then 'Allow texture to dry 1-2 minutes before LIGHTLY KNOCKING DOWN OR FLATTENING using a 6-8" wet drywall knife', held 'almost parallel'. A miss is not permanent: 'Texture can be scraped off and reapplied when still wet until desired pattern is achieved.' It 'Sprays best between 68-72°'.
- Bigger areas or a whole room: a hopper gun and compressor (USG: 'Small jobs can be completed using a Hopper Gun... with separate compressor'). Marshalltown's SharpShooter: material 'the consistency of pancake batter'; orange peel on 'the second smallest opening (#6)' at 'at least 30 psi'; knockdown on 'the middle opening (.315"/8.0 mm dia.) (#4), set the trigger fully open' at 'at least 20 psi'; the compressor must keep up with 'at least 7 CFM at 25 psi'. Their rule of thumb: 'The higher the air pressure, the finer the pattern; the lower the air pressure, the coarser the pattern.'
- Thin it or turn up the air? Makers disagree. Marshalltown: 'Do not thin the mixture to achieve a finer texture, rather increase the air flow and select a smaller orifice.' USG's ready-mix sheet thins more for orange peel ('add up to 0.75 gal. of water per 50 lbs.') than for knockdown ('up to 0.5 gal.'), and Wagner's chart calls for 'Slightly thinner (add water)' for fine patterns and 'Pancake batter' for medium. Either way, add water a little at a time: USG warns 'Over-thinning may cause poor bond, pinholes, and cracking' and to mix 'at not over 400 rpm' so you don't whip in air voids.
- When to knock it down is the whole trick, and it depends on how wet the splatter went on. Marshalltown: 'wait until the top of the texture pattern changes from glossy to dull in appearance (normally 15 to 20 minutes) and gently flatten the texture with a knockdown knife, taping knife, or trowel.' Wagner: 'let material dry for 10-15 minutes' and 'Do not wait more than 30 minutes'. Homax's thin aerosol coat: 1-2 minutes. Watch the shine, not the clock: knock a test patch at the dull stage, and copy the size of your existing flats.
- Mixing from powder or a box: USG spray texture says 'stir powder into recommended amount of water... Allow to soak for at least 15 min.—longer in cold water. Remix until a creamy, lump-free mix'; Homax's pour-in box likewise soaks '15 minutes' and is mixed 'slightly thinner' for orange peel and 'thicker' for splatter or knockdown. All-purpose joint compound works for 'simple texturing' (USG), but thin it 'in half-pint increments' and remember USG's own note that its spray textures give 'lower shrinkage than texturing with joint compound, resulting in less cracking'.
- Ceilings in Orlando: weight and humidity. USG: 'Heavy water-based textures may result in sagging of gypsum board ceilings' with 'high heat and humidity, improper ventilation'; its table rules out 3/8" board and allows 1/2" board only perpendicular at 16" on center. Keep air, product and surface at '55 °F minimal' until dry, 'Avoid drafts while applying, but provide ventilation after application', and 'Do not use unvented gas or oil heaters.' Run the AC; don't texture a ceiling in a closed-up summer house. Marshalltown: spray ceilings from about '18" below with the hopper angled upward at 30-50°'.
- Paint is not optional, and it waits. All-purpose compound used as texture 'should be overpainted when dry (not washable unpainted)' (USG). Dry times before paint vary by product, so read your label: USG spray texture 'May be painted after overnight drying'; Homax pour-in 'Allow texture to dry 24 hours before painting'; Homax water-based aerosol '2-5 hours (depending on heaviness of pattern)'. Homax's oil-based Pro can wants 'PAINT with 2 coats or more for complete hide and to match gloss'; plan on more than one coat over a patch.
- Before you sand or scrape old texture to blend a patch: if the house is older, test first. EPA lists 'Textured paint and patching compounds used on walls and ceilings' among places asbestos may be, and says 'Don't saw, sand, scrape, or drill holes in asbestos-containing materials' and 'Taking samples yourself is not recommended.' CPSC moved to ban consumer patching compounds containing asbestos in 1977. Adding new texture over sound old texture doesn't disturb it; grinding it down to blend does.
- Permit: Orange County's FAQ says 'You generally do not need a permit for minor home improvement projects, such as: Interior or exterior residential painting', along with flooring and same-spot cabinets. Texture isn't named on that list, but it is a surface finish like paint and changes nothing structural, electrical or plumbing; if in doubt, ask the county. If the patch covers a hole cut for a plumber or electrician, that trade's permit is the one that matters.
