Key facts before you start

Remove 100% of the old caulk — nothing bonds over old sealant or residue. CUSTOM requires joints "clean, dry and free of all contamination including old caulk or other sealants"; GE on caulking over old silicone: "You can, but it's not ideal." Scrape it all out, wipe with isopropyl alcohol (not soap), and let it dry completely — moisture sealed under a fresh bead re-grows the mold you just cut out.
On a flexing tub (GE names fiberglass) fill it with water before caulking and keep it full until the bead skins: "Tubs will naturally sink and flex from the weight of the water, putting stress on the sealant joint." Tool the bead immediately and work in short sections — silicone is tack-free in 15-20 min (CUSTOM) — and pull masking tape while the caulk is still wet.
Spec 100% silicone for tub/shower joints (permanently flexible; GE claims mold resistance up to 10 years). It is not paintable — CUSTOM: "Commercial 100% Silicone Sealant is not a paintable surface. Painting should be done prior to installation" — so paint the room FIRST; use siliconized acrylic (e.g., DAP Kwik Seal Ultra) only where the bead must take paint (it needs 4 hrs before water, 24 hrs ideally).
Water-ready times are conditional, not universal. GE Advanced Silicone 2: "Exposure to water possible in as little as 30 minutes with bead size max 3/16\", temperature min 65℉ and humidity min 50%. Otherwise, sealant should not be exposed to water for 8 hours" — fully cured at 24 hrs. Two CUSTOM limits a bathroom job actually hits: do not apply below 40°F, and cure "a full 7 days before being exposed to continuous submersion in water."
SHOWER DOOR: seal the OUTSIDE only. Sterling: "Carefully run a bead of caulk around the outside of the shower door where the bottom frame meets the shower receptor. Do not caulk on inside of shower door" — an inside bead traps the water the track is built to drain back into the pan. Kohler's sliding-door steps are asymmetric the same way: silicone "along the outside edge of the threshold," but "along the outside and inside edge of each wall jamb." Sterling: allow 24 hrs cure before use.
Inside corners and every change of plane are MOVEMENT joints — they take ASTM C920 sealant, NOT grout, or the grout cracks by design (CUSTOM's C-920 Class 25 silicone "meets or exceeds TCNA EJ171" and is "designed for use in coves, corners, changes in plane"; FBC-R R702.4.1 installs tile per ANSI A108). Apply after the grout has cured, over a closed-cell backer rod set so sealant depth is 1/2 the tile thickness — never deeper than 1/2\" or wider than 1\". Bonding to the joint bottom (3-point adhesion) splits the bead.
If the SAME joint keeps failing, suspect the substrate, not the caulk. FBC-R R702.4.2 allows only four backers behind tub/shower tile — glass-mat gypsum (ASTM C1178), fiber-reinforced gypsum (C1278), nonasbestos fiber-cement board (C1288/ISO 8336), or fiber-mat cementitious backer units (C1325) — and R702.3.7.1: "Water-resistant gypsum backing board shall not be used where there will be direct exposure to water, or in areas subject to continuous high humidity," so green board behind a shower is not a compliant backer and re-caulking only re-traps the water.
