Key facts before you start

FL code (FBC-R 2023 P2902.4.3): every sillcock/hose bibb needs an ASSE 1011/1019/1052 vacuum breaker or hose-connection backflow preventer — buy an anti-siphon bib, or permanently attach a screw-on hose-connection VB (tighten its set/break-off screw so it can't be removed). Only two exceptions: water-heater/boiler drain valves 'intended only for tank or vessel draining', and clothes-washer supply valves where the machine provides the protection.
Orlando spec: frost-free sillcocks are unnecessary — 'mild climate' anti-siphon wall faucets (e.g. Woodford Model 24, NIDEL 34HF vacuum breaker, ASSE 1011) are the correct class. Buying a loose VB: the 34H is for non-freezing areas ONLY (the FL part); the 34HD is the manual-drain version for freezing areas. If the house already has a frost-proof hydrant, its seat sits 4-14 in. inside the wall and the body must pitch downward toward the nozzle or it cannot self-drain.
Anti-siphon bibs must NOT stay pressurized >12 consecutive hours — hose-end irrigation/drip timers and closed Y-shutoffs (common in Orlando) are explicitly 'not designed for constant pressure' and wreck the VB seals. Woodford: all ASSE 1011/1019/1052/1053 devices should be replaced every 3-5 years, so an aged bib weeping at the vents is a replacement, not a rebuild.
A new/replacement VB may spit until it is seated — hose on, nozzle CLOSED, faucet full blast until the hose fills. On a frost-proof hydrant a steady gentle drain for ~15-20 sec after shutoff is normal, not a leak. Field-testing an ASSE 1052 preventer: purge the hose, raise it to 10 ft, watch the atmospheric vents — leakage past ~6 sec means the outlet check valve is faulty; replace the device.
Handle-stem drip: first fix is tightening the hex packing nut behind the handle clockwise until snug — no disassembly, water on. Only if it persists, replace the EPDM packing from the model's repair kit (Woodford RK-24, Arrowhead PK1000); don't replace the bib. Frost-proof stem sizing: measure the OLD stem tip-to-tip and subtract 4 in.; 1/4 in. over an even length means a pre-1999 'SP' stem.
Match the inlet before buying: 1/2" or 3/4" FIP, combination 1/2" sweat x 1/2" MPT, or 1/2"/3/4" sweat; PEX needs a crimp/push-fit x MIP drop-ear adapter. Counter-hold the faucet body with channel locks whenever you wrench the bib or its VB — otherwise you twist and crack the stub-out hidden in the CMU/stucco wall. Sweating a bib on: open the valve FULL before soldering or the heat wrecks the seat rubber and the factory solder joint. PTFE tape: male threads only, 2-4 wraps clockwise viewed from the thread end.
