Key facts before you start

Slip joints seal with the washer, not with tape: Oatey's order is "The nut goes on first, followed by the washer, with the tapered side of the washer facing the fitting" — reversed washers are the classic trap drip. "Hand-tighten the nut. Finish with a quarter-turn using pliers, snug, but not overtightened"; excess force cracks plastic nuts and strips threads. Thread tape/dope on a slip nut: "Usually, no... Tape is for threaded pipe joints, not slip nuts." Solvent-weld only fixed PVC runs, never the trap's slip connections.
Trap geometry is code, not preference (FBC-Plumbing 1002): liquid seal "not less than 2 inches... and not more than 4 inches" (1002.4); from the fixture outlet to the trap weir the vertical distance "shall not exceed 24 inches" and the horizontal "shall not exceed 30 inches" (1002.1) — the long horizontal tailpiece run to a disposal offset is where this gets blown; slip joints are legal only "on the trap inlet, trap outlet and within the trap seal" (1002.2); S-traps, bell, drum, crown-vented and moving-part traps are prohibited (1002.3), so never 'fix' a leak by looping the pipe into an S-trap.
Slope and size: horizontal drainage pipe 2-1/2 in or less slopes 1/4 in per ft (FBC-P Table 704.1). Minimum trap size is 1-1/4 in for a lavatory, 1-1/2 in for a domestic kitchen sink (Table 709.1), and "A trap shall not be larger than the drainage pipe into which the trap discharges" (1002.5) — oversizing the trap to 'drain faster' is a code violation and slows the flow velocity.
A sink that gurgles or smells of sewer after a new trap is a VENT problem, not a trap problem: FBC-P 909.1 caps the developed length from the trap weir to the vent fitting per Table 909.1 — 5 ft on a 1-1/4 in trap, 6 ft on 1-1/2 in, 8 ft on 2 in (at 1/4 in per ft). Past that the trap siphons dry and no replacement trap fixes it. Venting an island sink with an air admittance valve: individual/branch AAVs "shall conform to ASSE 1051" (918.1) and be "located a minimum of 4 inches... above the horizontal branch drain or fixture drain being vented" (918.4), and "Access shall be provided to all air admittance valves... installed in a location that allows air to enter the valve" (918.5) — an AAV sealed behind finished cabinet or drywall is a violation.
Dishwasher + disposer order: Florida residential code requires the high loop — "The dishwasher discharge pipe or tubing shall rise to the underside of the counter and be fastened or otherwise held in that position before connecting to the head of the food-waste disposer or to a wye fitting in the sink tailpiece" (FBC-R P2717.2); a deck air gap is an alternative, not a FL requirement. On a new disposer "you will need to tap out the dishwasher knockout plug" before clamping the hose to the inlet — the plug ships intact and a hose clamped over it backs the dishwasher up.
Clean vs replace: "p-traps do not require routine maintenance" — clear a clog through the union first. Oatey on materials: chrome-plated brass "can and will corrode over time with repetitive use," while polypropylene "resists corrosion and reactions with acids" — swap a repeatedly leaking chrome trap for plastic instead of re-tightening it.
