Shower Head & Handheld Swap: Tape Rules, Flow, Low Pressure
Updated 2026-10-31 · Sources verified 2026-07-20
Taking the old head off: 'Unscrew the showerhead from the shower arm. Rotate counterclockwise. Permit in Orange County: no permit needed. Exempt finish work under FBC 105.2 and Orange County's published list — but exempt work must still comply with the Florida Building Code. The full rule and its official source are below, with the code requirements and mistakes that trip up Orlando homeowners.
Key facts before you start
- Taking the old head off: 'Unscrew the showerhead from the shower arm. Rotate counterclockwise. An adjustable wrench might be necessary' (Moen), and 'Use care not to unscrew the shower arm; hold the shower arm secure' (Delta); a cloth over the jaws saves the finish. Then clean the arm: 'Remove old shower head and remove all pipe tape as well', and check 'that the washer from the old shower is not connected to the pipe. Use a thin utensil to check inside the pipe ... Do not use your fingers' (Waterpik). A ball-end arm needs 'a standard shower arm' before a handheld mount will fit (Delta).
- Tape or no tape depends on what seals the joint. Moen: 'If there is a rubber washer inside the threaded adapter on the showerhead, thread the showerhead onto the shower arm'; no washer, then 'Wrap thread seal tape around threads at bottom of shower arm'. Delta's head sheet goes further: 'Ensure the washer is installed in the female nut ... Hand tighten the shower head onto the shower arm. Do not use tools. The use of tools or thread seal tape may cause product failure and will void the warranty'; its handheld mount allows 'plumber tape 2-3 wraps around the threads of the shower arm only'. Waterpik: tape is for a metal connection; on a plastic connection 'pipe tape can cause damage'. Read the sheet in the box, and never tape a swivel ball or a washered hose nut.
- Handheld kits are hand-tight joints. Moen's combination head: 'Tighten diverter to shower arm with wrench. Hand tighten fixed showerhead to front of diverter. Hand tighten hose and washers to bottom of diverter and handheld shower', with 'Thread seal tape is not recommended for this project. Do not overtighten.' Delta: 'Seat the washer firmly into the hose nut ... Hand tighten - do not use a wrench or pliers', and 'If you attach the Vacuum Breaker to the Hand Shower, it will not function as designed', so the backflow piece goes at the arm. A slide bar needs a wall check first: 'Drill a 5/16 in pilot hole to determine if there's a stud', hollow wall gets '5/8 in' holes for the anchors (Moen).
- Replacing the arm itself: 'Unscrew the shower arm by hand and remove the flange. A pipe wrench or pliers might be necessary' (Moen), then 'Apply sealant tape to the threads of each end of the shower arm. Install the shower arm to the shower elbow and tighten securely with a clean strap wrench' and, with the head still off, 'Turn on the water to flush any debris' (Kohler). Tape, not paste: 'use thread sealant tape on the shower arm threads. Do not use thread sealant compound (pipe dope)' or it plugs the spray holes (Kallista). Kohler puts putty behind the flange; Moen seals 'around shower arm hole with sealant (caulk)' before sliding the flange on. The elbow in the wall must hold still: an arm that turns the elbow with it is a wall-open plumbing repair.
- Flow is fixed by law and by the head. Florida Building Code Plumbing Table 604.4: a shower head is limited to '2.5 gpm at 80 psi', and 'A hand-held shower spray is a shower head'. WaterSense heads 'use no more than 2.0 gpm' and must still deliver at least '60 percent of the maximum flow rate' at 20 psi, with no hidden override setting. The restrictor is part of the product: 'Removal of or tampering with the flow restrictor may result in showerhead failure and will void the warranty' (Delta); 'Do not attempt to remove the flow control' (Kohler).
- Weak spray is usually scale, not pressure. OUC water averages '7 gpg', so Orlando heads clog. Kohler: 'Firmly rub your finger back and forth across the spray holes', then pull the head, 'carefully pry up the edge of the screen washer. Remove and clean the screen washer', and reinstall it 'with the tapered end out'. Delta: soak in 'a 50/50 mix of distilled white vinegar and water' for '30 minutes'; Waterpik allows '2-3 hours' face down in vinegar, then run every mode to flush. 'The flow restrictors required for aerators and shower heads can clog' (Delta), so check that disc too. No abrasives, bleach or acid cleaners on the finish (Delta, Kohler).
- If the clean head is still weak, move inward: 'Low water pressure is often caused by a clogged aerator or mineral buildup in the cartridge' (Moen), and 'the water pressure issue could be caused by improper installation of your shower valve' or 'an issue with the water pressure to your home' (Delta). The cartridge is the faucet/shower cartridge guide; the whole house is the low water pressure guide. A brand-new head with weak flow often just means the lines were not flushed before it went on (Delta).
- Temperature lives in the valve, not the head. FBC-P 412.3: shower valves 'shall be equipped with a means to limit the maximum setting of the valve to 120°F, which shall be field adjusted in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions'. Moen's Posi-Temp limit stop is behind the handle: shut the stops, remove the handle, 'pull the Temperature Limit Stop out and rotate it clockwise' into a lower notch. If a new rain head suddenly runs cooler or hotter, the stop needs resetting, not the head.
- Permit: swapping a head, hose, slide bar or arm on the existing elbow replaces no valve or pipe, so it sits outside the plumbing work Orange County permits ('Most ... plumbing ... work does require a permit' is about the system in the wall). Replacing the valve body, moving the elbow or opening the wall for a leaking drop-ear is plumbing-permit work for a licensed plumber or an owner-builder permit.
