Fridge Door Seal Test & Water Under the Fridge: Fixes
Updated 2026-10-20 · Sources verified 2026-07-20
Short answer: no permit needed. If it plugs into an existing outlet (portable AC, plug-in range/dishwasher swap), no permit — but hardwired appliances or new plumbing/electrical connections are trade work needing permits. The full rule and its official source are below, with the code requirements and mistakes that trip up Orlando homeowners.
The permit answer

Key facts before you start
- The dollar-bill test (Whirlpool): 'place a dollar bill or piece of paper between the seal and the freezer, pull it out, and retest along the entire door seal.' Paper that slides out with little resistance means a poor seal at that spot; check 'around the entire freezer door perimeter'.
- Clean before you condemn it: Whirlpool suggests 'a quick wipe-down of the gasket using a damp cloth — no harsh cleaners'. A gasket that is torn or stays flattened after cleaning is a replacement part; Whirlpool says a worn or damaged gasket calls for the owner's manual or a technician, and GE sells door gaskets by model number.
- Fridge running all the time? Whirlpool: when continuous running 'is the result of dirty condenser coils or a gasket that isn't sealing properly, addressing those factors may help reduce the load on the compressor.' Coils live behind the kick plate or on the back; unplug before you vacuum them.
- Water on the floor once or twice a day: GE — 'it could be due to a clog in the defrost drain tube.' On some side-by-side models the DIY fix is to flush the drain hole 'with a solution made of 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 2 cups of hot tap water, using a meat/turkey (bulb) baster'.
- Know when to stop: GE says built-in 'and most freestanding models require service to correct the issue', and top-freezer and bottom-freezer models 'require some disassembly to access the defrost drain tube, so we recommend that you contact service.' Ice on the freezer floor is the same clog one stage earlier.
- Not every puddle is the drain. GE lists a loose water line and an icemaker leak as other sources and recommends 'checking that the refrigerator is leveled properly' (a fridge tipped forward drains toward the door). Water-line and icemaker problems are in the fridge / ice maker guide.
