Range Hood & OTR Microwave Replacement: Height, Duct, Outlet

The outlet is above it, on its own circuit. GE: 'The power supply cord and plug should be brought to a separate 15- to 20-ampere branch circuit single grounded outlet. Permit in Orange County: no permit needed. If it plugs into an existing outlet (portable AC, plug-in range/dishwasher swap), no permit — but hardwired appliances or new plumbing/electrical connections are trade work needing permits. The full rule and its official source are below, with the code requirements and mistakes that trip up Orlando homeowners.
Key facts before you start
- An over-the-range microwave has two hard numbers: GE and Frigidaire both want '66 in or more from the floor to the top of the microwave' and 'The space between the cabinets must be 30 in wide and free of obstructions', with at least 2 in from the bottom of the unit to the top of the range backguard (GE spec). It 'cannot be installed in cabinet arrangements such as an island or a peninsula. It must be mounted to BOTH a top cabinet AND a wall', and the structure has to carry it: 'this 63 to 85 pound product, plus additional oven loads of up to 50 pounds or a total weight of 113 to 135 pounds' (GE, Frigidaire). 'You will need two people to install this microwave oven.'
- The outlet is above it, on its own circuit. GE: 'The power supply cord and plug should be brought to a separate 15- to 20-ampere branch circuit single grounded outlet. The outlet box should be located in the cabinet above the microwave oven', and 'The outlet box and supply circuit should be installed by a qualified electrician'. 'Do not use with an extension cord', and a two-prong receptacle 'must be replaced with a properly grounded three-prong wall receptacle' (GE). Swapping like for like onto the existing outlet is a plug-in job; a kitchen that never had an OTR microwave needs a new circuit, which is electrical-permit work in Orange County.
- Hanging it: find the studs ('AT LEAST ONE WALL STUD'), 'Use the mounting plate as the template for the rear wall ... making sure that the tabs are touching the bottom of the cabinet', and 'It is important to use at least one wood screw mounted firmly in a stud to support the weight'; where there is no stud, 'drill a 5/8 in hole for toggle bolts' (GE). The top cabinet template sets the bolt and cord holes; 'When installing the microwave oven beneath smooth, flat cabinets, be careful to follow the instructions on the top cabinet template for power cord clearance'. Deep cabinets change things: if the cabinet with its doors is over 13 in deep, 'the unit must be spaced out from wall using adequate materials supporting 150 lbs' (Frigidaire). Orlando exterior kitchen walls are block behind furring: Tapcon anchors into the block, not drywall toggles (see the block-wall mounting guide).
- Venting an OTR microwave: three modes, 'Outside Top Exhaust', 'Outside Back Exhaust' and 'Recirculating', and the blower has to be turned to match. GE: 'Remove and save the screws that hold the blower motor', reposition it with the 'Fan Blade Openings Facing Up' for outside venting, 'Make sure wires remain routed in the grooves of the motor frame', 'Do not pull or stretch the blower' wires. Recirculating units take a charcoal filter kit 'To be used when the microwave oven cannot be vented to the outside' (Hotpoint). Duct is 3-1/4 x 10 in rectangular or 6 in round; a transition adaptor means 'the bottom corners of the damper will have to be cut to fit ... to allow free movement of the damper' (GE).
- Under-cabinet hood height is a range, and gas needs more: Broan says the bottom of the hood 'MUST NOT BE LESS than 18 in for electric range or 26 in for gas range and at a recommended maximum of 30 in'; Whirlpool wants '24 in minimum' over either and '30 in suggested maximum'; Frigidaire '24 in min. for electric ranges and 30 in min. for gas'. Cabinet opening '30 in minimum' for a 30 in hood, 12 in cabinet depth (Whirlpool). 'Two installers are recommended because of the weight of the hood' (Broan). Whirlpool caps its hoods at cooktops of '40,000 Btus or less'.
- The duct is the code. Florida Building Code Residential M1503.1: 'Range hoods shall discharge to the outdoors through a duct. The duct serving the hood shall have a smooth interior surface, shall be air tight, shall be equipped with a backdraft damper and shall be independent of all other exhaust systems. Ducts serving range hoods shall not terminate in an attic or crawl space or areas inside the building'; M1503.2: ducts 'shall be constructed of galvanized steel, stainless steel or copper'. The makers say the same: 'Do not exhaust air into spaces within walls or ceiling or into attics, crawl space or garage' and 'use only metal ductwork' (Broan); 'Plastic or metal foil vent is not recommended', 'Do not use a 4 in laundry-type wall cap. Use 7 in round metal vent' (Whirlpool). Listed ductless hoods are the code's one exception.
- Duct run and termination: 'Duct runs should be as short as possible. Avoid the use of elbows ... Do not use duct smaller than the discharge on the hood' (Broan); Whirlpool: 'Use no more than three 90° elbows', count a 90 as 5 ft and a 45 as 2.5 ft of equivalent length, and 'If roof or wall cap has a damper, do not use damper supplied with the range hood'; Frigidaire's budget is '50 ft' equivalent. The wall or roof cap must sit 'not less than 3 feet from property lines; 3 feet from operable and nonoperable openings into the building and 10 feet from mechanical air intakes' (FBC-R M1506.3). Cutting a new hole through a block wall or the roof is the point this becomes permit work.
- Big hoods need makeup air: FBC-R M1503.4 requires it for hoods 'capable of exhausting in excess of 400 cubic feet per minute', with a single-family exception up to 800 cfm 'if there are no gravity vent appliances within the conditioned living space'. Frigidaire's manual flags the same thing and says to 'Consult your HVAC professional'. A 600 cfm hood in a house with a gas water heater in a closet is not a swap, it is a mechanical design question.
- Hood wiring: 'A 120 volt, 60 Hz., AC only, 15-amp, fused electrical circuit is required' (Whirlpool, Frigidaire), connected 'BLACK to BLACK, WHITE to WHITE and GREEN or bare wire under GREEN ground screw' (Broan), with 'approximately 12 in of wiring through wiring hole in cabinet' (Broan). Hardwired hoods can often take the maker's listed cord kit instead ('Use only with range hood cord connection kits that have been investigated and found acceptable for use with this model', Whirlpool). 'For a non-ducted installation, DO NOT cut a duct access hole, only cut the hole for electrical wiring' (Broan).
- Filters and fire: 'The grease filter should be cleaned frequently. Use a warm dishwashing detergent solution' (Broan; Frigidaire's is dishwasher safe), and the charcoal filter 'is not washable, and will last up to 6 months' (Broan, Frigidaire). 'Always turn hood ON when cooking at high heat' and 'Grease should not be allowed to accumulate on fan, filters or in exhaust ducts' (Broan). CPSC: 'Unattended cooking is the #1 cause of cooking fires'; 'Slide a pan lid over flames to smother a grease or oil fire, turn off the heat and leave the lid in place until the pan cools', 'Never use water or flour on cooking fires'.
- Permit: Orange County's no-permit list covers plug-in appliances in spirit ('Installing portable plug-in heating or cooling units') and same-location cabinets; a like-for-like OTR microwave or hood on the existing outlet, circuit and duct is that kind of swap. The page's other line is the one to respect: 'Most construction, remodeling, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural work does require a permit', so a new circuit, a new duct penetration through the wall or roof, or a first-time hood where there was none is permit work. FBC-R M1504.1 also requires an OTR microwave to be installed per 'the manufacturer's installation instructions', which is why the template matters.
