Key facts before you start

• A video doorbell needs TWO transformer numbers and VA is the one people miss. Ring wired/Pro line: "16 to 24 VAC, 50/60Hz, 10VA to 40VA"; Ring battery models and Elite drop to 8-24 VAC / 5-40 VA, so "my neighbour's Ring ran on this" proves nothing about a Pro. Nest wired (orig, 2nd and 3rd gen): "16-24 V AC, 10-40 VA." The old chime transformer was sized for a solenoid drawing for one second, not a camera drawing continuously — a matching 16V stamp is not a match. Note also that "Newer Video Doorbells come with DC power supplies instead of AC" (Ring), which carry safety features "not found in other DC supplies" — do not substitute a generic DC brick.
• Under-powering damages hardware rather than just under-performing, and each brand has a tell. Ring: the wrong rating can "Damage your devices" and "Stop your in-home chime from working properly." Nest: a doorbell "blinking a yellow light on the front" "isn't receiving enough power." Fix the supply; do not work around the symptom.
• The wire is a spec too. Ring: "Use 16- to 20-gauge wire for your Ring doorbell. Wires that are too thin or too thick might not deliver enough power to your Ring device." Check gauge and run length before buying a second transformer.
• The in-home chime kit is mandatory and ships in the box. Google: "The Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd gen) and Nest Doorbell (wired) must be installed with the chime connector included in the box" (the 1st-gen connector is not compatible with 2nd gen). Ring: "You must use the Pro Power Kit with your Wired Doorbell Plus and Pro" — and set the app's Chime Type FIRST: "Do not ring your doorbell until you have updated your in-app settings for Chime Type" (In-home Chime Settings -> None/No Chime with the kit fitted). A buzzing chime after install is usually a missing or miswired connector, not a dead chime.
• Plain wired chime that quit: the cheap suspects are outside, and never oil it. Broan-NuTone: "if the chime does not operate properly, check the pushbutton(s) for poor contact or loose connections. Be certain wires are not touching the tone bars" — the exterior button lives in weather and is the usual failure. Sluggish plungers: "clean plungers with a nonflammable cleaning fluid and wipe dry. CAUTION: NEVER OIL CHIME PLUNGERS." Oil seizes them. Sizing is per chime MECHANISM, not per door: 16 volt 10 VA for one chime, 16 volt 20 or 30 VA for two, 16 volt 30 VA for three. And a terminal marked "0 Batt" is battery-only — "This is not to be used with a transformer."
• Do not assume "low voltage, so no permit" (general info for Orange County/Orlando, not legal advice). Orange County: "A low-voltage permit is required for security systems, burglar alarms, cable TV, closed circuit TV, data cabling, phones and speaker wires unless exempted by statutory requirements," and its electrical permit page names the category with "garage door openers, doorbells, chimes etc...".
