SERIES arc: "A low current arc has been detected within one of the current pathways... typically found in worn or degraded appliances and extension cords, poor connections in appliances or fixtures." Eaton's resolution is to "identify the equipment causing the tripping, and repair or replace" — that is unplug-things-one-at-a-time territory, and it is often a lamp cord or a space heater. PARALLEL arc: "A high current arc has been detected between two conductors... usually found in installed wiring where the wire has been compromised by a nail or screw, tight staple, and damaged insulation," resolution "locate fault location and replace wire." That is inside the walls. Stop and call an electrician.
- NO code recorded is itself information: on the Eaton unit the breaker does not log a code for a thermal overload, a short circuit detected mechanically, the TEST button, or switching it off by hand. So a blank log with a real trip means the mechanical half acted, which points at plain overload or a dead short rather than an arc. Tell them apart by behaviour: an overload takes a little while and comes back when you run the same load, while a short trips instantly and every single time regardless of what is plugged in. For an overload, move something to another circuit before assuming anything is broken.
- An OVERVOLTAGE code is not your house's fault. Eaton: "The breaker will trip if it experiences voltage of 160 V rms or greater," and the resolution is to "investigate utility power for imbalance in the phases or loss of neutral." A lost service neutral is the same failure that makes lights in one room dim while another room brightens, it can put well over 120 V on half your circuits, and it is on the utility's side of the meter. This is a call-now condition, not a weekend project.
- If an AFCI breaker will not stay on at all, suspect the breaker itself before the circuit. Eaton's unit runs a "continuous self-test of electronic components," and "the built-in self-test features will not allow the AF/GF breaker to re-latch if it detects a malfunction in the AF/GF detection circuit" — resolution: "replace the breaker." A brand-new AFCI that refuses to latch on a circuit that was fine yesterday is a plausible dead breaker, not proof of a hidden fault.
