Hayward: "If pump does NOT prime within five minutes, stop motor and determine cause" — do not let it keep grinding.
NEVER run the pump dry: water is the coolant and lubricant for the mechanical shaft seal. Hayward — "Running pump dry may damage seals, causing leakage, flooding, and voids warranty"; Pentair — "If the pump is run dry, the mechanical seal will be damaged and the pump will start leaking." So a drip between the wet end and the motor is a replaceable shaft seal (SuperFlo set 354545SS; the manual carries the full DIY procedure), not grounds for a whole new pump.
SAFETY: if the pump failed to prime or ran without water, do NOT open the strainer pot — Pentair: such pumps "may experience a build up of vapor pressure and may contain scalding hot water. Opening the pump may cause serious personal injury." Kill power, make sure the suction and discharge valves are open and the pot is "cool to touch," then open with extreme caution.
MOTOR/PUMP SWAP — the bonding conductor is not optional and is NOT the ground wire (the motor has a separate GROUND SCREW and BONDING LUG). Re-land a solid copper bond, 8 AWG minimum, from the pump's bonding lug to all metal pool parts, equipment, conduit and metal piping within 5 ft of the pool walls; FL: the jumper "shall be connected to the terminal on the circulating pump motor that is intended for this purpose" (only a double-insulated motor is excepted). Pump circuits 120-240V single-phase need GFCI protection "whether by receptacle or by direct connection" — and a pump that trips its GFCI without the test button being pushed means "a ground current is flowing, indicating the possibility of an electric shock. Do not use this pump" (Pentair). Do not just reset it.
Choosing a replacement: DOE's DPPP rule binds MANUFACTURE, not the pump you already own — "Each dedicated-purpose pool pump that is not a submersible pump and is manufactured starting on July 19, 2021 must have a WEF rating" at or above the table value. The real breakpoint for self-priming pool filter pumps is 0.711 hydraulic horsepower (hhp), NOT "1 HP": at 0.711 hp <= hhp < 2.5 hp single-phase the minimum is WEF = -2.30 * ln(hhp) + 6.59, which single-speed models effectively cannot meet — so quote variable-speed, not a like-for-like single-speed swap. Keeping or repairing an existing single-speed pump is not prohibited.
Orlando freeze nights: do NOT winterize the pool — Pentair, "In mild climate areas, when temporary freezing conditions may occur, run your filtering equipment all night to prevent freezing"; with no automation, run equipment 24/7 until temperatures recover.
